President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he had a “lengthy” conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which Putin allegedly agreed to “immediately” begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump said he and Putin discussed working closely together, including potential visits to each other’s countries. He also mentioned that he would call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to inform him of the discussion.
Trump has appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to lead the negotiations.
During the call, Trump and Putin reflected on the historical ties between the U.S. and Russia, particularly their alliance in World War II. Trump claimed that Putin even referenced his campaign motto, “Common Sense,” while discussing the urgency of stopping the war.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict has been ongoing since February 2022, when Russia launched its invasion. The White House has not yet provided further details on the negotiation process.
