No fewer than 461 persons are currently being tracked by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) over possible infection with Lassa fever, as the disease continues to spread across 63 local government areas in 11 states.
Lassa fever, a seasonal viral illness, is primarily transmitted by the Mastomys rat species and is more prevalent during Nigeria’s dry season. The disease is known for its high fatality rate and potential for human-to-human transmission, especially in healthcare settings.
Since the 2016 outbreak, the NCDC has recorded a steady increase in recurring cases, prompting intensified surveillance and response efforts.
Health authorities are urging the public to maintain proper hygiene, rodent control measures, and early medical intervention to curb the spread of the virus.
