The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has expelled Comrade Nwangwu Njideka Mariana, the Immediate Past Chairperson of SSANU at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, over allegations of gross misconduct.
In a resolution reached at its 50th NEC meeting held on February 25-26, 2025, at the Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State, SSANU found Comrade Nwangwu culpable of multiple offenses, including financial misconduct, insubordination, and unauthorized transactions.
According to the expulsion letter signed by Comrade Kabiru Tijani Duhu, the decision was taken based on several reports on SSANU Unizik matter and after Nwangwu failed to appear before the disciplinary committee despite being invited for fair hearing. Recall that Nwangwu had appeared before the Zonal Committee and National Committee to make her defence, but failed to appear before the Disciplinary committee when it damned on her that she may not escape sanctions. The NEC accused her of:
- Diverting funds meant for the National Secretariat building.
- Engaging Theolax Impex, a company where she is a co-signatory, in a fraudulent MoU to execute the branch secretariat project.
- Disregarding national directives and failing to exhaust internal dispute resolution mechanisms before approaching the court.
- Illegally selling SSANU’s old Sienna vehicle without congress approval.
Beyond these allegations, further revelations have emerged about Comrade Nwangwu’s controversial tenure. Reports indicate that her questionable dealings in the Postgraduate College led to her redeployment and a warning letter from the university. Additionally, an indictment by the Professor Umenweke-led committee, which was submitted to the former Acting Vice-Chancellor for necessary actions, further solidified concerns about her activities.
Comrade Nwangwu has also been linked to alleged dubious land transactions in Inyi, Enugu State, while sources claim that 90% of SSANU members’ money allegedly paid to IPPIS officials for “settlement” was funneled back into her account.
Following her expulsion, SSANU has directed her to immediately hand over all union properties in her possession. She will no longer enjoy any benefits or privileges associated with SSANU membership.
Sources close to Comrade Njideka Nwangwu revealed that she has vowed not to go down alone and threatened to expose other exco members involved in her shabby deals especially the branch PRO who allegedly connived with her to sell the Siena bus at N400,000 after Comrade Nwangwu had collected the sum of N380,000 from SSANU purse to allegedly put the vehicle in order, which according to her, was to sell it at a good price.
More details to follow.
