The House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abass, continues to prove itself as one of the most ineffective legislative chambers in Nigeria’s history. Instead of focusing on critical national issues such as unemployment, a crumbling education system, corruption, infrastructural decay, and a failing healthcare sector, the lawmakers have chosen to direct their energy toward banning pornographic websites.
At a time when millions of Nigerians are struggling with economic hardship, inflation, and poverty, one must ask: Who exactly is watching porn? The reality is that most Nigerians can barely afford food, let alone spare money for mobile data to stream adult content. The few who can afford it are the wealthy elite—ironically, the same politicians who enjoy complimentary data plans from telecom providers.
Rather than chasing trivial issues, the House of Representatives should focus on enacting laws that will create jobs, revamp the economy, improve infrastructure, and strengthen the healthcare system. Legislators must prioritize policies that address the immediate needs of the people, rather than indulging in distractions that do nothing to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
As the 2027 elections approach, Nigerians must demand more from their legislative aspirants. Candidates should present clear legislative proposals, with specific timelines and implementation strategies, to show how they intend to bring real change to the National Assembly.
It is time to put an end to these meaningless legislative distractions. The country needs solutions, not superficial battles over irrelevant issues.
