Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to President Bola Tinubu, made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter). He also revealed that the African Aviation and Aerospace University (AAAU), located in Abuja, has officially commenced academic activities.
With the new status, Maiduguri Airport will begin handling international flights, significantly boosting air travel in the North-East region. The development is expected to enhance trade, foster regional connectivity, and open up fresh economic opportunities.
The Federal Government says this step aligns with its broader goal to strengthen Nigeria’s aviation sector and improve accessibility and infrastructure across the country.
