The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, labeling him as a politician primarily motivated by self-interest and blinded by ego.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party urged El-Rufai to move on from his grievances and stop what it described as “sulking.” The remark follows El-Rufai’s appeal to opposition members to join him under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Dismissing the invitation, Morka said, “El-Rufai’s call for opposition members to join him under the SDP banner is nothing short of an invitation to drink from a chalice poisoned by selfishness, vengefulness, and delusions of grandeur.”

The APC’s criticism comes after El-Rufai, in an interview with BBC Hausa, accused the party of abandoning the progressive ideals of its founders, arguing that the party had devolved into a platform where personal interests overshadowed collective goals.

Referencing El-Rufai’s past statements, Morka noted that the former governor had previously condemned politicians driven solely by self-interest, stating, “We have politics of private interest. We have no politics of public interest. Politicians will proudly tell you that politics is about interest. If they don’t get what they want, they are ready to collapse the system.”

“Today, El-Rufai stands diminished as the epitome of a self-interested politician, blinded by ego, driven by untamed emotion, and brimming with a vengeful desire to collapse the system,” Morka remarked.

According to the APC spokesman, El-Rufai’s discontent stems from his alleged disappointment over not securing a ministerial position in President Bola Tinubu’s administration. “El-Rufai’s appears traumatized by his failure to land a ministerial position.” The party dismissed his claims of ideological betrayal as a mere cover for his personal grievances.

“The APC’s commitment to its founding values and ideals remains as valid and progressive today as it was then. El-Rufai’s allegations of deviation from those values exist only in his foggy imagination,” Morka concluded.
