Abuja, February 28, 2025 – The National Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Mary Alile, has weighed in on the ongoing conflict between Senator Natasha Uduaghan and the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio. Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Dr. Alile emphasized the importance of internal conflict resolution mechanisms within the National Assembly while also reaffirming the party’s commitment to supporting women in politics.
Addressing the allegations of victimization and sexual harassment made by Senator Natasha against the Senate President, Dr. Alile stated, “It is an allegation yet to be proven. However, the National Assembly is a respectable institution with rules and mechanisms for resolving internal issues. What we see here are internal matters, and they should be addressed through the appropriate channels.”
She acknowledged the challenges women face in politics but cautioned against resolving such matters through the media. “It’s not strange that women face barriers in politics; this has been a longstanding issue. However, every institution has procedures for dealing with such concerns. I don’t think going to the press or social media to call names is the right approach.”
Dr. Alile reaffirmed her confidence in the Nigerian judiciary, noting that legal frameworks exist to address cases of harassment and discrimination. “There is no institution where issues like sexual harassment don’t arise; this is not peculiar to Nigeria. However, there are policies, procedures, and mechanisms in place to address them, and women must use the right channels to seek justice.”
On the role of the APC in promoting women’s participation in politics, Dr. Alile highlighted various initiatives by the party, particularly from her office. “At the APC, we are implementing strategies and policies daily to help women overcome barriers in politics. My office is committed to ensuring gender inclusivity and increasing women’s participation through empowerment programs.”
She further noted the strides women have made in the current administration, emphasizing that many have been appointed to key positions. “Women have continued to rise politically, especially in this administration. We have seen more women empowered with ministerial and board chairmanship roles. For example, I am also the Chairman of the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba.”
As the legal battle between Senator Natasha and the Senate President unfolds, Dr. Alile urged all parties to adhere to institutional mechanisms for conflict resolution while assuring Nigerian women that the APC remains committed to their empowerment and political advancement.
