

Fast-rising boxer Basit Adebayo has claimed the vacant National Lightweight Title after securing a unanimous decision victory over Segun Gbobaniyi at the Balmoral Convention Centre last weekend.
Adebayo set the tone for his triumph with a first-round knockdown, maintaining control throughout the ten-round contest to earn a decisive win.
Speaking after the fight, Adebayo expressed his excitement over the victory, describing it as the fulfillment of a long-held dream.
“Winning the national title has been a dream, and I’m proud to have achieved it in such a convincing manner,” he said.
The event, organised by Balmoral Group, delivered an action-packed “Fight Night,” with Adebayo’s headline bout being the highlight of the evening. CEO of Balmoral Group, Ezekiel Adamu, commended the level of competition, emphasizing the company’s commitment to promoting Nigerian boxing talent.
“This is exactly what we envisioned when we launched our monthly fight series, showcasing Nigeria’s boxing talent and providing a platform for these athletes to shine,” he said.
In other bouts, Rilwan Lawal defeated Taofeeq Ganiyu via unanimous decision in an eight-round featherweight contest, while Yusuf Adisa claimed victory over Babatunde Oni in their super-bantamweight clash.
Abiodun Adeniyi outpointed Fatai Balogun after four rounds in the cruiserweight division, and Muritador Monyasahu secured a knockout win over Idowu Okusote in the second round.
Dr. Rafiu Oladipo, President of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control, praised Adebayo’s performance and commended the organisers for hosting a successful event.
NBBofC Secretary General, Remi Aboderin, also applauded the fighters, describing the night as a major success.
“From the opening bell to the final fight, every boxer gave it their all. This is what boxing should be about—the talent, grit, and determination,” Aboderin said.
Adebayo’s victory further cements his status as a rising star in the lightweight division, with fans eagerly anticipating his future bouts.
