Mgbakwu community in Awka North, Anambra State, has become a hotspot of tension following a security operation led by the Directorate of State Services (DSS) in the last 48 hours. The operation, which took place around Omo Block Industry by Ezi Ituku Farm Road and Youth Centre Road, was part of a statewide directive to combat security threats, particularly in forests suspected to harbor armed individuals.
According to sources, the DSS, backed by reinforcements and heavily armed, was on a mission to access the Mgbakwu forest when some uninformed locals attempted to barricade their vehicles. The resistance led to a heated confrontation, exacerbating an already volatile situation.
In a separate but related development, the Udogachi security outfit, operating under the state government’s directive, arrested several individuals in Mgbakwu for allegedly staying out late at night. While these arrests were reportedly routine, concerns arose as some residents perceived them as unjust, leading to heightened tensions.
Government intelligence has long placed the Mgbakwu forest on a security watchlist due to the presence of unidentified armed individuals. Authorities believe some locals may have direct or indirect links to these groups, prompting further arrests by the DSS and Udogachi operatives for investigation. Those found culpable are expected to face prosecution.
The security operation, however, was not limited to Awka North but was a state-wide directive aimed at addressing security concerns in various communities.
As security forces intensify their operations, community leaders and stakeholders have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace and security, emphasizing that only those found guilty of criminal activities will face legal consequences.
While the situation remains tense, security agencies continue their crackdown, determined to rid Anambra State of criminal elements hiding within local communities.
