Democrats warn Trump tax cuts come at Medicaid’s expense in open letter

Medicaid is a government programme that provides health insurance to low-income individuals in the US. And in an open letter, Senate Democrats are warning that Trump’s tax cuts will come at the expense of that programme.

“Congress should not give tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans by ripping health care away from millions of Americans,” the letter, signed by senators like Chuck Schumer and Bernie Sanders, said.

The senators note that a report in March from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office advised Congress that the spending cuts needed to allow for Trump’s tax cuts would almost inevitably involve cuts to Medicaid.

Trump has said he plans to protect the Medicaid programme, though he has not publicly explained how.

“Please do not believe Republicans’ empty health care promises,” the Democratic senators wrote.

“Right now, Republicans are writing the most consequential tax and health care legislation contemplated in decades entirely behind closed doors. That’s because Trump and Congressional Republicans must hide the ugly truth—their legislation feeds corporate and wealthy individuals’ greed by hurting tens of millions of Americans.”
