Despite FG Warning, Adeleke Insists Osun Local Government Polls Will Proceed

Adeleke

Atiku Despite the Federal Government’s call for a postponement, Governor Ademola Adeleke has reaffirmed that the Osun State local government elections will proceed as scheduled on Saturday under the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC).

This comes after Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Lateef Fagbemi advised the state government to suspend the elections, citing a recent Appeal Court ruling that reinstated previously elected local government officials whose tenure runs until October 2025. The AGF warned that holding fresh elections would be unconstitutional and a violation of local government autonomy.

However, while addressing a delegation of civil society groups in Osogbo, Governor Adeleke dismissed concerns over the election’s legality, stating that democracy operates under the rule of law and that no one can assume the authority of the courts. He assured that voters were eager to exercise their rights and commended OSIEC’s preparations.

Adeleke maintained that the elections would accelerate grassroots development and urged all parties to uphold democratic principles and ensure a peaceful process.
