Ejiofor Calls Out Southeast Governors Over Human Rights Abuses and Disappearances

Ifeanyi Ejiofor

Human rights lawyer Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor has sounded the alarm over what he describes as an escalating crisis of abductions and enforced disappearances in Nigeria’s Southeast region, allegedly carried out by Nigerian security forces. According to Ejiofor, this troubling trend has been largely ignored by regional politicians, many of whom are preoccupied with preparations for the 2027 elections.

In a recent statement, Ejiofor highlighted the plight of hundreds of Southeast residents, including elderly parents and young men and women, who are reportedly being abducted without a trace. He expressed deep concern over the lack of information available to the families of these victims, who are left in agonizing uncertainty about the fate of their loved ones.

Ejiofor further claimed that many of these abducted people are being detained at the Wawa Military Barracks in Niger State, where they are allegedly held indefinitely, with no clear path to freedom. He called on Southeast governors to urgently address this issue, using the full resources of their offices to demand an end to these human rights violations.

The lawyer’s call to action follows recent corroboration from Amnesty International, which has also raised concerns about the reported abductions and disappearances of people in south East. Ejiofor urged political leaders to speak out against what he termed “a crime against humanity” and to hold those responsible accountable.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Ejiofor lamented that there has been little public outcry or condemnation from those in power. He emphasized the need for a coordinated effort to address these injustices and protect the rights of the innocent civilians who are being targeted.

Ejiofor’s statement serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing human rights challenges in Nigeria, particularly in south East region where security operations are often conducted under the guise of combating insecurity. The silence from political leaders, he warned, could have dire consequences for the region’s future.
