The Federal Government has mandated an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the recent jailbreak at the Koton Karfe Custodial Centre in Kogi State. Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, expressed strong condemnation of the incident, describing it as a deeply concerning development.

In a statement released Monday in Abuja by his media advisor, Babatunde Alao, the Minister assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to recapture the escaped inmates. He emphasized that the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) will leverage its advanced biometrics and technological resources in the pursuit.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo has also directed the Acting Comptroller General of the NCoS, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, to conduct an on-site assessment of the Kogi facility. This assessment will be followed by a thorough audit to pinpoint the root causes of the security breach.

“We are actively addressing the situation. Our personnel are deployed in Kogi, and I have ordered a detailed audit to understand the circumstances,” the Minister stated.

Reports indicate that the jailbreak, which occurred on Monday, resulted in the escape of at least 12 inmates. Furthermore, a custodial official is reportedly missing following the incident.
