The latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday have placed Nigeria’s Super Eagles as the 43rd-best team in the world, moving up one spot from their previous 44th position. The announcement was made by the world football governing body on its official X handle.
Nigeria’s slight improvement is likely linked to their recent victory over Rwanda in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers for the 2026 tournament, set to be held in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
Globally, Argentina retained the top spot, bolstered by a series of strong performances. The Netherlands climbed to sixth, overtaking Portugal, which dropped to seventh. Belgium, Italy, and Germany occupy the eighth, ninth, and tenth spots, respectively.
Nigeria’s Position in Africa
On the continental stage, Morocco reclaimed the top spot in Africa, moving up two places to 12th in the world, ahead of Senegal, which is now second in Africa and 19th globally. Egypt (32nd) and Algeria (36th) moved up one place each, ranking third and fourth in Africa. Meanwhile, newly crowned African champions Cote d’Ivoire made a significant leap, climbing five spots to 41st, making them the fifth-best team in Africa.
At 43rd in the world, Nigeria ranks sixth in Africa, just behind Cote d’Ivoire. Tunisia, which climbed three places to 49th, follows as the seventh-best team on the continent.
The next FIFA rankings are set to be released on July 10, 2025.
