Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has advised students to develop practical skills alongside their academic pursuits to remain competitive in today’s evolving world.

Speaking at the second matriculation ceremony of the Nigerian British University (NBU) in Asa, a border community between Abia and Rivers states, Governor Otti, represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Uche, emphasized the need for students to embrace innovation, leadership, and skill acquisition.

He stressed that academic success is no longer measured by grades alone but by the ability to apply knowledge practically.

“I advise matriculating students to go beyond academic excellence and cultivate innovative thinking, leadership skills, and essential sub-skills that will prepare them for the competitive global landscape. People are now judged not by their first-class or second-class degrees but by what they can do,” he said.

The governor also highlighted his administration’s investment in education, revealing that 20% of the state’s over ₦700 billion annual budget has been allocated to the sector. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to free education for all children in Abia State, ensuring accessibility and quality learning for young people.

Commending the Vice-Chancellor of NBU, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, for transforming the institution into a center of academic excellence, Otti encouraged the university leadership to continue their efforts in maintaining high standards.

In his address, Prof. Fawehinmi congratulated the newly admitted students and urged them to embrace discipline, dedication, and excellence. He noted that NBU, which began academic activities in 2024 with 16 accredited courses, now offers 24 programs, with 23 currently admitting students.

He announced that 162 fresh students were being admitted into five faculties:

• Law – 30 students

• Management & Social Sciences – 17 students

• Computing & Information Technology – 36 students

• Basic Medical & Allied Health Sciences (College of Health Sciences) – 69 students

• Engineering & Applied Sciences – 10 students

Prof. Fawehinmi reminded students that their certificates would be awarded based on both character and learning, stressing the university’s zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractice, drug abuse, and other anti-social vices.

He urged them to use the internet wisely, avoid the misuse of social media, and take advantage of the institution’s ICT infrastructure and recreational facilities to enhance their academic experience.

“As proud members of the NBU community, you are encouraged to form lifelong friendships and engage in activities that support your academic, social, professional, and spiritual well-being,” he added.

The matriculation ceremony marked another milestone for NBU as it continues its mission to provide quality education and equip students with the skills needed for a dynamic world.
