
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has strongly condemned the violent mob action carried out by a local vigilante group against a group of travelers along the Uromi-Obajana Road in Edo State.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the travelers, who were moving in a truck and identified themselves as hunters, were found in possession of 19 locally fabricated firearms when intercepted by the vigilantes.
According to the statement, Unsatisfied with their explanation, the vigilantes hastily concluded that the individuals were kidnappers and rather than allowing for due process and proper investigation, the vigilante group resorted to unlawful mob justice, leading to fatal consequences.
The Police added that in response, the Edo State Police Command swiftly deployed operatives to the affected community, restoring order. So far, 14 suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, while a manhunt is underway to apprehend others involved.
The IGP has therefore directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), DIG Sadiq Abubakar, to take over the case and ensure a thorough, impartial, and expedited investigation.
Reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, the IGP emphasized that extrajudicial actions or unlawful killings will not be tolerated.
He urged the public to remain calm and cooperate fully with the investigation, assuring that all those found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
Furthermore, the police caution against jungle justice, reiterating that the unlawful possession of firearms is a criminal offense under Nigerian law.
The Force also warned against taking the law into one’s hands but encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
