The House of Representatives Committee on Finance has proposed a bold move to exempt Nigeria’s military personnel from paying personal income tax, in recognition of their dedicated service and the risks they face in safeguarding the nation.
The proposal was introduced by the committee chairman, Hon. Abiodun Faleke, during a review session of four tax-related bills submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the National Assembly in October 2024.
Speaking during the session, Faleke emphasized the importance of providing financial relief to members of the armed forces, citing the high-risk nature of their duties and their critical role in maintaining national security.
“Our military personnel put their lives on the line daily to protect this country. Granting them tax exemption is a way to honour their sacrifices and give back in a tangible way,” Faleke stated.
The proposal received unanimous support from all lawmakers present at the meeting. If passed, it would mark a significant policy shift—offering tax-free income to serving members of the military across Nigeria.
More details are expected as the legislative process continues, but the proposal is already being hailed as a timely and patriotic gesture.
