The 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon once again saw East African dominance, with Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes claiming top honors in the prestigious 42km race.
In the men’s category, Kenya’s Edwin Kibet emerged victorious, crossing the finish line in 2:14:06 to secure the $50,000 grand prize. Kibet, who placed third in last year’s edition, had previously won the marathon in 2023, making this his second title.
The women’s race was won by Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa, who clocked 2:37:04 to claim her first-ever victory in the competition.
On the Nigerian front, Nyango Gyang Boyi made history as the first local athlete to finish, securing 8th place overall with a time of 2:25:41.58. His impressive performance earned him a $4,000 prize, along with an additional ₦2 million for being the fastest Nigerian in the race.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, also participated in this year’s marathon, which kicked off from Western Avenue, Surulere, in front of the National Stadium and concluded at Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island.
The 2025 edition attracted thousands of runners, cementing its status as one of Africa’s premier long-distance races. Recognized as a Gold Label event by World Athletics in 2023, the marathon continues to gain international acclaim, drawing elite athletes from around the globe.
