The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit pharmaceutical products, unwholesome processed foods, and unsafe cosmetics worth ₦4.7 billion in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The agency, in collaboration with the Nigerian Customs Service, carried out the destruction across South-South states, marking the first joint zonal product destruction exercise in the region.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Christiana Adeyeye, represented by South-South Zonal Director Chukwuma Olugbo, revealed that several warehouses stocked with expired alcoholic beverages—revalidated and reintroduced into the market—were uncovered in Port Harcourt.
She disclosed that the agency’s intelligence-led operation in July 2024 led to the seizure of substandard medical products, unregistered cosmetics, and imported vegetable oil lacking Vitamin A fortification from various locations, including Delta State.
According to her, the crackdown underscores NAFDAC’s commitment to protecting public health by eliminating harmful and counterfeit products from circulation.
