NLC Declares Nationwide Protest Over 50% Telecom Tariff Hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a nationwide protest against the recent 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs.

The protest is set for Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

In a communiqué issued after its National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting, the NLC strongly condemned the hike, calling it “insensitive and unjustifiable.” Telecom operators had initially proposed a 100% increase, but the Federal Government approved a 50% adjustment instead.

NLC President Joe Ajaero rejected the increase, arguing that it worsens economic hardship for Nigerians already struggling with inflation, high fuel prices, and rising electricity tariffs. He directed all NLC affiliates to begin mobilization for the protest and called on civil society groups to join.

The union is demanding an immediate suspension of the tariff hike and a dialogue with stakeholders to review the decision. Ajaero warned that if the demands are not met, the NLC may escalate its actions, including a nationwide boycott of telecom services.

“The NLC remains committed to protecting Nigerian workers from exploitative policies,” Ajaero stated, urging Nigerians to resist policies that prioritize corporate profits over public welfare.
