The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has vehemently rejected claims made by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, alleging that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is responsible for orchestrating crises within opposition parties, including the NNPP.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Major, dismissed El-Rufai’s remarks as false and baseless, demanding a swift retraction.
The allegations, according to El-Rufai, suggested that the APC, under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, was intentionally sowing discord within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and the NNPP to weaken their structures.
Responding to the allegations, Dr. Major explained that the NNPP’s challenges are internal, arising from disagreements over the dissolution of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that had temporarily aligned the NNPP with The National Movement (TNM) and the Kwankwassiya Movement. According to him, these disputes are unrelated to any interference from the APC.
“El-Rufai’s assertions are based on misinformation likely fed to him by individuals opposed to NNPP’s internal democratic processes,” Dr. Major stated.
He noted that the disagreement within the party emerged after the 2023 general elections, following the end of the MoU that temporarily united the three groups. The internal issues, he added, have been publicly documented since 2023.
Describing El-Rufai’s remarks as “unguarded and unacceptable,” Dr. Major stated that Nigerians are well-informed and cannot be misled by such statements. “El-Rufai must understand that the decision of who governs Nigeria in 2027 is not his to make,” he added.
The NNPP chairman urged El-Rufai to desist from meddling in the party’s affairs, emphasizing that the NNPP does not see itself as an adversary to the APC or any other political party.
Instead, he noted that the party remains committed to promoting good governance, collaboration, and adherence to the rule of law.
The NNPP reiterated its dedication to resolving its internal matters independently and strengthening its structures ahead of future electoral challenges.
