The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, standing as the preeminent voice of the Igbo people and a beacon for sociocultural equity, unequivocally decries the recent proposal from the House of Representatives for the creation of thirty-one new states. This proposal is, in our discerning view, not only a farcical undertaking but also a gross misrepresentation of the complexities and realities that underpin statehood in Nigeria. Most alarmingly, we find that the majority of the proposed states lack the essential credibility and merits necessary to be deemed viable entities.
The leadership of the House of Representatives has been forthright in their assessment, notably through the articulate observations of Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who has categorically dismissed this proposal for failing to meet fundamental constitutional requirements. This clarification is not only warranted but essential for restoring the dignity and integrity of the esteemed chambers of our legislature. It is indisputably premature and cavalier for the House to entertain such a proposal, one which, frankly, undermines its own stature and credibility.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo staunchly advocates for the creation of additional states; however, we assert that such initiatives must be confined exclusively to Southern Nigeria. The Northern region, with its existing nineteen states—an outcome of decisions made during military rule—undeniably enjoys a substantial numerical and political advantage over the Southern region, which currently encompasses only seventeen states. This discrepancy has fostered an environment where the Northern region has effectively utilized its excess to intimidate and exert undue influence over the Southern populace.
In this context, we extend a direct and urgent appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, imploring him to exercise his political will and moral fortitude to address this glaring imbalance. The benefits accrued by the Northern region, manifested through its nineteen states, are a source of significant disadvantage for the South, and the call to action is both clear and compelling: the creation of two additional states in the South is non-negotiable.
Our foremost recommendation is that the first of these states be established in the Southeast, which, tragically, is currently limited to just five states. The sixth state in the Southeast should be regarded as a top priority, ensuring that it achieves parity with other geopolitical zones, particularly the Northwest, which boasts seven states. Furthermore, the allocation of the second new state should be thoughtfully considered for either the Southwest or the South-South regions, thereby achieving a total of nineteen states across both the North and South and eliminating the historical inequity that has long plagued our political landscape.
This call is not merely about increasing the number of states; it is fundamentally about dismantling the entrenched political and economic dominance exercised by the Northern region over the South. The establishment of these two additional states would represent a monumental step toward justice, equality, and the affirmation of the rights of all Nigerians to fair representation and governance.
In conclusion, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains steadfastly committed to the cause of our people, advocating for policies that promote equity, justice, and national unity. We call upon President Tinubu to act decisively in the interests of the Southern regions and the nation as a whole. The creation of two additional states is imperative for fostering a truly balanced and inclusive Nigeria where every voice is heard and valued.
Signed:
Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro
