Political Tension As Shettima Refuses to Move Into VP Residence Amid 2027 Uncertainty

Shettima and Tinubu

Eight months after its commissioning, Vice President Kashim Shettima has refused to move into his official residence, citing concerns that the N21 billion mansion may have been bugged to monitor his activities.

A close associate of the Vice President revealed that Shettima believes the security and communication systems in the residence could have been compromised, allegedly to track his movements and interactions. His refusal to relocate comes amid growing political tensions, with reports suggesting that certain Northern leaders are opposed to President Bola Tinubu’s second-term ambitions in 2027.

According to sources, Shettima is wary of speculations that he may be replaced as Tinubu’s running mate in the next election, with former Speaker Yakubu Dogara rumored as a possible alternative. This has fueled concerns that his activities are being closely monitored by the presidency.

The official residence, commissioned by President Tinubu on June 7, 2024, was initially awarded in 2010 at a cost of N7 billion but was abandoned until its completion at an escalated cost of N21 billion. During its inauguration, Tinubu emphasized that providing a befitting residence for the Vice President was a mark of respect for the office.

Despite this, Shettima has opted to remain in his current residence, reportedly to avoid increased scrutiny and surveillance. His decision raises fresh concerns over internal political rifts within the ruling administration ahead of the 2027 elections.
