Residents of Eleyewo, Ilu Abo, Bolorunduro, and surrounding areas in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State are calling on the state government and intervention agencies for urgent assistance after a devastating rainstorm wreaked havoc on their properties.
The storm, which occurred during a heavy downpour on Monday evening, caused destruction worth millions of naira, affecting homes, vehicles, shops, and churches. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident.
According to eyewitnesses, the rain began around 6:30 pm and quickly escalated into a violent storm with strong winds that tore off rooftops and caused widespread damage. A local resident reported that the roof of an LA Primary School in Ilu Abo was significantly damaged, while the Redeemed Christian Church in the area lost its iron roofing sheets and ceiling. The fence of another church, Possibility Church, also collapsed.
One of the affected residents, Mr. Lukmon Haruna, lamented the destruction of his shop and goods, calling on the government for support. “The storm was incredibly severe, and we couldn’t salvage anything. Over 20 houses and churches were destroyed. We are pleading with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and other philanthropists to assist us,” he said.
In response, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Ebenezer Adeniyan, expressed sympathy for the victims and assured them of government support. “Officials from the State Emergency Management Agency will assess the damage and provide recommendations for government assistance to those affected,” Adeniyan stated.
Another victim, Mrs. Funmilayo Fadimu, also appealed for help, stating that both her home and shop were badly damaged. “Many of my items were ruined. It’s difficult for me to repair the shop and replace what was lost. I need assistance from both the state and federal governments,” she pleaded.
