The Nigerian Senate has imposed a six-month suspension on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, over allegations of misconduct and violations of legislative protocols.
The decision, finalized during a plenary session on Thursday, March 6, 2025, also includes the suspension of her salary and allowances, as well as the withdrawal of her security aides for the duration of the suspension.
The controversy surrounding Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension traces back to February 20, 2025, when she protested against a change in her Senate chamber seating arrangement.
She argued that the adjustment was made without her approval and perceived it as a strategic move to undermine her participation in legislative discussions.
The situation escalated into a heated exchange between her and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, during which she accused him of intimidation and misconduct.
Following the dispute, the case was referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, led by Senator Neda Imasuen (LP, Edo South).
After reviewing the incident, the committee determined that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions amounted to a serious breach of Senate regulations.
As a result, the committee recommended a six-month suspension, during which she would forfeit her entitlements, including salary, allowances, and security escorts.
During the plenary session, Senate President Akpabio presented the committee’s report to the chamber for deliberation.
The recommendation was put to a vote, with the majority of senators supporting the suspension. Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro endorsed the disciplinary action, emphasizing the need to uphold order and respect within the legislative body. He compared the move to a corrective measure intended to reinforce discipline in the Senate.
The Senate outlined a possible path for an early reinstatement, stating that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan could return before the completion of her suspension if she formally apologizes in writing to the Senate leadership.
In the absence of such an apology, the full suspension will be enforced, restricting her access to the National Assembly premises, sealing her office, and halting payments to her legislative aides.
