In a dramatic turn of events amidst the political crisis in Rivers State, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reportedly advised Governor Siminalayi Fubara to take decisive control of the situation by shutting down the State House of Assembly and declaring a state of emergency if necessary.
During a private visit to the Government House in Port Harcourt, Obasanjo allegedly urged Governor Fubara to assert his authority as the elected Chief Security Officer of the state, cautioning him against bowing to political pressures from external forces.
“You are the governor, elected by the people. You are the Chief Security Officer of Rivers State. What you order stands—neither Tinubu nor Wike put you in power,” Obasanjo was quoted as saying.
He further advised Fubara to withdraw all security personnel attached to Assembly members, dismantle opposing political structures, and demolish any venue earmarked for impeachment moves.
Obasanjo also reportedly warned the governor against playing “U.S.-style politics in a lawless environment,” urging him instead to act in defense of his mandate.
Political observers believe the former president’s visit and his bold recommendations could mark a turning point in the deepening rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, as well as heighten tensions with the federal power structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
