Prominent Democratic lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has denounced the Trump administration’s targeting of US citizens and visa holders speaking out in support of Palestinians.
“We must acknowledge the terrifying moment that we are in right now,” she said.
“We are watching our neighbours, students and friends being fired, targeted and disappeared. It is real. Our co-workers, US citizens and immigrants alike are being disappeared off the street by men in vans with no uniform. Educators are being fired for teaching American history accurately,” she said.
“Activists are being detained without charge or evidence for using their First Amendment rights. Especially when they use them for Palestinians.”
The US representative from New York was speaking at a rally, co-organised with US Senator Bernie Sanders, in Los Angeles, which the organisers said drew a crowd of 36,000 people.
