Renowned lawyer and political commentator Dele Farotimi has issued a sharp critique of Nigeria’s governance, particularly targeting those who played a role in bringing President Bola Tinubu to power.
Speaking during an interview on News Central TV, Farotimi did not mince words as he dissected the consequences of political decisions made by the nation’s power brokers.
Reflecting on the role of Tinubu’s supporters, he emphasized that the very individuals who championed his rise to office would eventually bear the brunt of his leadership.
“Yesterday’s beneficiaries, even those who brought Tinubu to power, those who refused to listen to reason, who endorsed it, who explained it, who are complicit in the erection of this system, are going to become victims of this system,” he stated.
Farotimi also referenced British historian Lord Acton’s famous dictum on power, offering his own interpretation of the phrase.
“Lord Acton it was that had that long-winded quote: ‘power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely’—nonsense. He should have simply stopped at ‘power corrupts.’ The purpose of power is to corrupt,” he argued, suggesting that unchecked authority inevitably leads to widespread consequences.
Expressing frustration over the unequal distribution of suffering in Nigeria, Farotimi stressed the need for collective resistance.
“Those who have brought this man into office will be the first victims of his rule, and it will be nice if they too begin to feel victimized as the average Nigerian has been victimized. All this while, if suffering is not democratized, consensus to fight it will not be found,” he remarked, implying that only shared hardship could inspire nationwide efforts for change.
