
Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has been plunged into mourning and has subsequently shut down operations following a devastating road accident that claimed the lives of five students on Sunday, March 23, 2025. The university’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement released on Monday, detailing the horrific collision that occurred near the Balogun area, close to Unity School in Ikire, Osun State.
The accident involved a luxury bus traveling from Ibadan and an 18-passenger bus originating from Osogbo, resulting in a catastrophic head-on collision. According to reports from the Nigerian Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the impact was severe, leading to multiple fatalities, including five UNIOSUN students.
Immediately upon receiving news of the tragedy, UNIOSUN management dispatched a team to the accident scene to identify and provide assistance to any affected students. Tragically, the university confirmed the deaths of Olagbemide Dotun, a 200-level Software Engineering student; Suleiman Farouq Adedayo, a 400-level Law student; Ogundare Pelumi, a 300-level Public Health student; Ogundare Elijah, a 100-level Mechanical Engineering student; and Olawuyi Mary, a 200-level Nursing student. One student, Olagbemide Damilola, a 200-level Medicine and Surgery student, survived the accident and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The Nigerian Police have confirmed a total of ten fatalities from the collision. In the wake of this devastating loss, UNIOSUN has announced an immediate shutdown of its campus activities. The university is working closely with relevant authorities to gather further details about the accident and is providing necessary moral and logistical support to the bereaved families, including assistance with funeral arrangements.
