The University of Calabar recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking a significant milestone that blended celebratory achievements with a call for critical educational reform. The golden jubilee was highlighted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commissioning of over two billion naira worth of infrastructural projects, signaling the federal government’s support for the institution’s future. These projects, funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (Tetfund), included a Hall of Fame Complex, engineering workshops, administrative blocks, and essential service facilities, all designed to enhance the university’s academic environment.

Vice Chancellor Professor Florence Obi emphasized the successful completion of previously abandoned projects, attributing this turnaround to improved project management under her leadership. This achievement showcased the university’s capacity to overcome bureaucratic hurdles and deliver tangible results, setting a potential precedent for other Nigerian institutions. The jubilee also served as an opportunity to recognize contributions to national development, with Minister Nyesom Wike receiving an honorary Law degree during the 37th Convocation Ceremony. Wike pledged to prioritize education and governance, acknowledging their pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s future.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu delivered a lecture that challenged the university community to embrace innovation and societal relevance, moving beyond traditional theoretical frameworks. He stressed the importance of gender parity in education and advocated for the integration of digital technology into learning processes. Kalu also addressed the contentious issue of quota-based education, calling for a shift towards a system that prioritizes empowerment and inclusivity. He argued that education should be accessible as a birthright, not a privilege, and should equip students with practical skills that contribute to national development. His vision proposed a transformative approach to higher education, aligning with the broader goals of national progress.
