The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withdrawn the licences of 574 secondary schools across Nigeria for their involvement in examination malpractice.

This was disclosed by the Head of WAEC’s National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, during a press briefing held at the Council’s headquarters in Lagos on Thursday. He confirmed that the affected schools would not be allowed to participate in the upcoming 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which is scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 24.

“This year, we have shared with the government a total of 574 schools that have had their recognition withdrawn,” Dr. Dangut stated. “These schools are no longer recognised by WAEC as examination centres, and we will not conduct examinations there.”

Dr. Dangut also revealed that the list of blacklisted schools has been forwarded to the Nigerian government for further action, adding that the measure aligns with efforts to uphold the integrity of public examinations in the country.

For the forthcoming 2025 WASSCE, WAEC announced that a total of 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools have registered. This includes 979,228 male candidates and 994,025 female candidates.

The examination body reaffirmed its commitment to curbing exam malpractice and maintaining high standards in the conduct of its assessments across the West African sub-region.
