Suspended Rivers Lawmakers

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday, April 7, hosted suspended Rivers assembly lawmakers to a dinner in the United Kingdom.

In a video shared on X, the senior special assistant on public communications and social media to the minister, Lere Olayinka, said the lawmakers, “who are in the UK for legislative capacity building”, were hosted to a dinner by the minister who left for the UK on Sunday night after visiting his political friends and associates in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Last week the suspended lawmakers announced plans to embark on a visit to the UK. A statement released by Martins Wachukwu, special assistant on media to Martin Amaewhule, speaker of the Rivers assembly, said the UK tour aims to enhance lawmakers’ legislative skills.

Wachukwu stated that the five-day tour began in Central London, adding that lawmakers viewed it as a chance for peer review and deeper parliamentary insight.

He added that during the opening ceremony, lawmakers expressed optimism that the tour would enhance peer engagement and offer valuable insights to strengthen parliamentary oversight functions.

This UK tour comes weeks after President Tinubu suspended the state governor, Sim Fubara and the lawmakers over the protracted political crisis between the governor and his godfather, Nyesom Wike.

The President then nominated Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired vice-admiral, as a sole administrator of the state.
